Familia Rojas frenta a nuestra casita |

The tent that Wilmar and team set up |
We have been in Argentina for a little over a month now and we wanted to go ahead and let you know what we’ve been up to. If we were bored the first two weeks, these last two have been nothing but go, go, go! Wilmar has been working hard with preparations for a regional conference, which ended this week. Wilmar made a trip to Bragado (about 3 hours away) to get beds for people attending the conference. He helped to put up the large tent we spoke of before we left.
Wilmar: While I was putting up the tent another guy came by to help us. I figured he was a Christian and I asked him if he went to church. He told me that he didn’t. I asked if he had heard about what Jesus had done for him and for me. He said he hadn’t heard, which seemed strange. I asked if he wanted to hear about this Man and he said that if I wanted to tell him, it would be fine. So, I started to share with him everything that Christ did for humankind. He listened with interest. I haven’t seen him again, but I hope that the seed I have planted gives fruit sometime in the future.
South America Regional Conference 2011 |
Jessica has mostly been watching the children, but has also been able to squeeze in a few hours of office work here and there, and of course preparing good food for her family in a strange country and taking lunch to Wilmar at his work site.
So far, her job is working on processing, translating, etc. the letters from children who are sponsored through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. The children are located in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile and received funds to help with educational expenses. Before we came to Argentina we sponsored a child from the Dominican Republic, so it’s fun to see the other side of the process and be a part of helping out the kiddos here in the Southern Cone.
Israel (4 yr.) and Caleb (21 mo.) are adapting to their new environment well. The first couple of weeks were pretty rough, but they are doing well now. We have been able to fly a kite we got for free at a garage sale and enjoy trips to the park. They especially like it when we go on the public bus. Caleb only has to hear the word “colectivo” (the word they use for bus here) and he starts getting out the backpacks we always take along on the bus and Israel starts looking around for coins to pay the bus fare. They miss their grandparents a lot, but we are fortunate to be able to communicate by Skype with them often.
This week we tried our hand at navigating the medical system. We suspect that Israel may have an infection, so we took him to the doctor. We elected to go to the nicer private clinic verses the free hospital where we would have to wait in lines. We paid our money and the doctor saw Israel and agreed she would need a sample and sent us to the lab. The lab personnel told us we needed to go to the pharmacy and buy the little jar and return in the morning with the sample. The doctor also had told us that we would need to return on Saturday to see her again, but that they probably would not have the lab results yet. We’re not sure why they won’t have any results yet after 3 visits to the clinic, but we’re committed to at least seeing the process through this time. I think we’ll opt for lines at the hospital next time…at least it will be free and maybe we’ll get everything done in one trip...although we hope there won’t be too many more trips. We are counting this experience as another one of our missionary adventures!

Jessica has posted some pictures on Facebook, too, if you’d like to take a peek. We still haven’t bought a car; mostly because we haven’t had a chance to look around for one, so please keep that in mind as you pray for us. Also, Wilmar leaves on Monday to go on a Work and Witness trip to the northern part of Argentina (Formosa) with a group from Olivet Nazarene University. They say that it’s more rural and I understand that the people are more indigenous there. He’ll be gone until the following Monday. Please pray for him and the group of doctors and nurses. Also, keep Jessica and the boys in your prayers, as they will be “alone” for a week!
Note: If anyone is wondering, the water goes down the drain counter clockwise here.
Blessings,
Wilmar and Jessica Rojas
